The FDA has approved a new COVID-19 vaccine under emergency use authorization. This vaccine was created by Johnson and Johnson and unlike the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines that have been available so far, it only requires one dose. It is slightly less effective at preventing symptomatic COVID-19 disease but still provides excellent protection against severe disease. This vaccine also has evidence that 29 days after vaccination it can provide protection against asymptomatic COVID-19 disease, which is extremely beneficial for preventing asymptomatic spread of the infection.
This vaccine uses different technology than Pfizer and Moderna. Pfizer and Moderna are both mRNA vaccines- they use mRNA to teach cells in the body how to make a specific viral protein. Our immune system then learns to recognize this protein and then is prepared to fight the virus if we come into contact with it. This allows a strong immune response without the risks of coming in contact with the actual infection and all of the potential long-term effects of that infection. Johnson and Johnson's vaccine does a similar thing, but uses DNA carried in by an adenovirus. DNA is much more stable than mRNA, so it doesn't require storage at super-cold temperatures and can be stored for longer in a refrigerator. Although all of these vaccines uses genetic material, none of them can change your own DNA. We expect some side effects to these vaccines that indicate the body is having an immune response (headaches, body aches, fatigue, fever, etc). Major/serious side effects are rare. The risks of being infected with COVID-19 and potentially having long-term effects or dying from that infection are much higher than the risks of the vaccine. As with all vaccines, it is not recommended that you receive it if you are truly allergic to one of the ingredients, but these allergies are rare.
I am excited that this vaccine is now available because I am actually able to meet the storage requirements! I have applied to be a vaccine provider and if/when I am approved, I plan to order some of this vaccine. However, if you are currently eligible to be vaccinated, PLEASE do not wait for me to get it! Since I have a very small practice I imagine I will be lower on the list to receive vaccine allocations, and I don't want anyone to miss out on the opportunity to receive the vaccine while waiting for me. I simply hope that I will be able to contribute to vaccine distribution to the community as more individuals become eligible.
